What is Elephant Grass?
Elephant grass, also known as napier grass, is a type of grass that resembles sugarcane. It can grow up to 4 meters in height and can be cultivated by farmers throughout the year. This grass serves as excellent fodder for livestock, particularly dairy animals like cows and buffaloes. It enhances milk production and is highly nutritious for animals. Elephant grass is a versatile crop that thrives in various weather conditions and is favored by livestock.
Subsidy for Elephant Grass Cultivation
The government is providing a subsidy of INR 10,000 per hectare for elephant grass cultivation. In the budget for 2023-24, it has been decided to allocate funds for elephant grass cultivation in every gram panchayat of all districts. The aim is to encourage progressive livestock farmers to cultivate elephant grass on 0.1 hectares of land.
Subsidy Process for Elephant Grass Cultivation
The subsidy for elephant grass cultivation will be provided to farmers after physical verification by agricultural department officials. Once the verification is completed, the subsidy amount will be directly transferred to the farmers’ bank accounts.
How to Apply for Subsidy on Elephant Grass
Farmers in Rajasthan can apply for the subsidy on elephant grass cultivation through the Raj Kisan Sathi Portal, as the subsidy is currently available only in Rajasthan. The selection of progressive livestock farmers for demonstration plots will be done by agricultural supervisors or assistant agricultural officers using the Janadhar Card. Selected farmers or institutions will receive the required planting material for elephant grass cultivation. In addition, gaushalas (cow shelters) with sufficient water for irrigation and the capacity to produce fodder can also apply for elephant grass cultivation through the portal. Farmers can apply online for this subsidy through their nearest Common Service Center (CSC).
