The Impact of Urea Subsidy on Farmers: A Comprehensive Analysis

Posted on August 26, 2023January 20, 2024 By allsarkari-naukri

Introduction

Urea is a vital fertilizer used by farmers to enhance crop productivity. Recognizing the significance of providing affordable urea and fertilizers to farmers, the Indian government has taken initiatives to ensure their availability at subsidized rates. Despite the rising prices of fertilizers in the international market, Indian farmers continue to have access to these essential resources at affordable prices. This article explores the recent allocation of 10 lakh crore rupees as urea subsidy by the central government and its implications for farmers.

The Need for Urea Subsidy

Urea is extensively used in crop cultivation as it promotes crop growth and increases yield. However, excessive use of urea can have adverse effects on soil health. Therefore, it is crucial for farmers to use urea in limited quantities to achieve better crop production while maintaining soil health.

Allocation of 10 Lakh Crore Rupees for Urea Subsidy

During his address on the occasion of the National Festival, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the allocation of 10 lakh crore rupees as urea subsidy for farmers. This subsidy ensures that farmers can avail urea at a significantly lower price compared to the global market rate. Currently, the price of urea stands at 266.50 rupees per bag, thanks to the government’s subsidy allocation.

How Farmers Benefit from Urea Subsidy

It is important to note that the urea subsidy is not directly provided to farmers. Instead, the government provides subsidies to companies involved in manufacturing fertilizers. As a result, farmers can purchase urea and other fertilizers in the market at subsidized rates. This subsidy not only helps farmers enhance crop productivity but also increases their income.

Latest Rates of Urea and Other Fertilizers After Subsidy

The recent subsidy allocation by the central government ensures that farmers can purchase urea and other fertilizers at affordable rates. Here are the latest rates of some commonly used fertilizers:

FertilizerWeightSubsidized Rate (per bag)
Urea45 kg266.50 rupees
DAP50 kg1350 rupees
NPK50 kg1470 rupees
MOP50 kg1700 rupees

Fertilizer Rates Without Subsidy

Without the subsidy, the prices of fertilizers are significantly higher. Here are the rates of fertilizers without subsidy:

FertilizerWeightRate (per bag)
Urea45 kg2450 rupees
DAP50 kg4073 rupees
NPK50 kg3291 rupees
MOP50 kg3654 rupees

The Rising Importance of Nano Urea

Nano urea has emerged as a promising alternative for farmers. Not only does it contribute to crop and soil health, but it is also more affordable compared to conventional urea. The government is actively promoting the use of nano urea as it benefits both farmers and the environment. Nano urea is available in liquid form and can be easily applied to crops, making it convenient for farmers.

Potential Savings with Nano Urea

A bottle of nano urea, containing 500 ml, is equivalent to a bag of urea weighing 45 kg. While nano urea does not receive government subsidy, it remains available to farmers at a considerably lower price. Currently, a bottle of nano urea costs around 225 rupees, which is significantly less compared to the price of urea. By utilizing nano urea, farmers can save approximately 41.50 rupees per bottle, making it a cost-effective option for enhancing crop productivity.
